Hawker Place Physiotherapy and Pilates hosts a Heart Foundation Walking Group every week lead by one of our physiotherapists, Chelsea Barker.
The Hawker Place Physio Walking Group is free for all of our clients, as well as anyone in the wider community of Hawker and surrounding suburbs. Our aim is to help our clients and the community become more physically active, regardless of age or ability.
Physical activity can help:
* Reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes
* Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), dementia and stroke * Improve cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels
* Reduce the risk of some types of cancer
* Assist with weight loss
* Increase muscle and bone strength
* Improve mental health
* Improve balance and coordination
* Decrease pain
* Improve movement and joint mobility
* Improve sleep quality
* Provide opportunities for socialisation and making new friends
Physical activity can also benefit the management of various illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.
For adults aged 18-64 years, the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines are:
* Be active on most, if not all, days of the week
* 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity OR 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week
* Strengthening exercises on at least 2 days per week
For adults aged 65 years and over, the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines are:
* Do some form of physical activity, regardless of age, weight, health problems or abilities * Be active every day in as many ways as possible, doing a range of physical activities that incorporate fitness, strength, balance and flexibility
* Accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days
Joining a walking group can make physical activity more fun and enjoyable. A walking group can also help boost confidence, especially if you are nervous about getting active. Our walking group organiser and physiotherapist, Chelsea Barker, can answer any questions or concerns you may have about physical activity. She is also happy to answer any physiotherapy-related questions you may have along the way!
